There is No Light in Darkness (Darkness Series) by Claire Contreras

Review by Willow 5 Stars (written 08.02.2013)

Blake Brennan had a difficult introduction to life. She lives in a constant state of paranoia, believing that she is the reason those around her get hurt. Her feelings are tested when her past comes back to haunt her and she must choose whether she wants to continue to live in fear or let her heart love freely.

What Have I just read??

From the minute I finished reading the prologue I knew I was going to be in deep. The story engages you straight away and you thirst to know more. The prologue starts with a little girl waking in the night, hearing what sounds like gunshots, going down to investigate. Seeing a man "wearing daddy's PJs" being carried out the house over another man's shoulder. She then sees her mother lying on the floor in a pool of blood. See what I mean? this is seriously engages you from the beginning.

Chapter one goes to the present. This little girl is all grown up, but still having nightmares of that night. Chapter two goes back to the past and more memories and then it keeps flicking from past to present and back. I loved this, we were getting to see what happened to the little girl through out her growing up which is a big set up to what is going on in the present, but how it is seeping little bits of info out keep you hooked. You learn that when the girl was thirteen she moved into a house with a foster mother, who already had two foster children with her. Aubrey, who is living with her now and is a brother/best friend figure and Cole, who it becomes clear, loves her and there is clearly history there, but they are both seeing other people. As the book moves on you learn what happened between her and Cole and how their relationship is growing now and bits of information on what happened that night, who the players are and how all the people in her life are connected to that, but this is all a secret that puts her and her love ones in danger. I really cant give any more details than that with out giving parts of the story away and I really want to you feel what I felt reading it.

I absolutely loved this book, it had romance, action and lots of suspense, trying to piece everything together. A couple of times it made me sad and at one point it left my heart feeling like it was stuck in my throat. The characters are all really likable and I felt it was well written.

I have just two complaints, firstly twice when we learned a lot of information about the past and what was happening it just jumped, once to five months later and I was screaming WTF. I wanted to learn more about how this information was processed, it just didn't feel right to me. Lastly the ending. I HATE cliff-hangers, but it seems that just lately all the books I want to read have them! I've decided to suck it up and have read a few lately that I honestly didn't think the cliff-hangers where that bad, So I was hoping this would be the same. Boy was I wrong!! This has got to be THE worst cliff-hanger I have ever read!! BUT even though I was screaming WTF noooooooo lol it has just made me more hungry for the next book and it hasn't actually taken anything away from me enjoying the book. I Loved it!
