“…but I’m drawn to the danger – attracted to the stranger.”
Wow!! That was some journey, I think I have whip lash, my brain has been bounced around a bit and I cannot think straight, but what an ending! One that I never saw coming! The last 25% of this book is fast paced and action packed and leaves you catching your breath, a lot happens, there is a lot to digest and it has taken me a while to comprehend what I have read and being able to put them down into a review. But here goes…
Emilia has had a really crappy life, her mother is incapable of looking after herself let alone a child, her father let straight after conception never to be seen again, she has been brought up in a trailer and basically left to fend for herself and look after her mum. She struggles to keep the trailer over their head and her mother seems intent on a downward spiral and so one day when she comes home to see ambulances and police she knows that it isn’t good news. So now that her mum has left her and she has no one Emilia decides to find her biological father and so begins a road trip to heartbreak.
Her father basically slams the door in her face and Emilia is devastated, she ends up in some run down motel, crying her eyes out, being rejected once again, nowhere to go, no one to go to, she is devastated.
Alex is the epitome of tall, dark and handsome. He just so happens to be at the same run down motel, he battles with himself, he shouldn’t stop, he should just carry on, but something draws him to the girl crying her eyes out. He stops, he helps, he shouldn’t but he does. And so begins this sorry tale, Alex thinks he is doing the right thing to counter all the bad in his life. He shouldn’t bring this girl into his life, but she shone like a beacon and he couldn’t help himself, he has never wanted anything, but he wants her.
“The feeling to protect and care for a beautiful stranger that I just met scares the living shit out of me.”
Emilia was extremely naïve and vulnerable and any normal girl wouldn’t have got in that car, but Alex exuded honesty and integrity, she felt that she could trust him and he soon proves that her initial opinion of him was spot on. It was easy to tell that he was hiding his “real” job and it was obvious that his real job could put Emilia in danger. It was a bit instalove but it does happen and it is not long before that initial friendship turns into more.
“When I see you, all I see is good, Em. I’m so sorry I brought you into the middle of this. It was selfish of me.” So fucking selfish.
This is where the story really starts and it really ramps up. I felt so sorry for Alex, he was born into this world and he didn’t want it, he had always been the brains behind the scenes but now that his father was in prison it was up to him to run the “cartel” and he didn’t want to. But it is what was expected and if you don’t do as you are told you end up on the wrong end of a gun. He really was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I sympathised with him and I empathised and as much as he wanted to do the right thing he also wanted to do something for himself. He does come clean to Emilia and she accepts it, she would rather have him as he was than not have him at all and it means that both of them need to change. But with the FBI breathing down his neck his life never runs smooth and Sam the FBI agent now has an Achilles heel for Alex…Emilia.
“Don’t ever leave me again. I’m lost without you. I’m so tired of being lost…”
I really enjoyed this read, it was tense and suspenseful and I was fully immersed into Emilia and Alex’s story, I have to say that a few of the reveals were a tad predictable but as I said above the ending…I never saw coming. The writing kept me captivated from start to finish, the tension was palpable and even though it was instalove I really felt Alex’s emotions. I cannot wait to see what life has in store for these two, with an ending like that I am itching for the next book, like seriously itching, I really, really, really need it NOW! Rebecca Shea, you better write quick!
