“No one has ever so much as grazed my Hole That Shall Not Be Penetrated.”
This is one of those books that I term “Marmite,” meaning you are either going to love it or hate it. I am not sure if this is the way the author intended but I found myself reading this tongue in cheek, it was funny, it was incredibly cheesy and extremely over the top but despite that I had one hell of a laugh. Yes there is a worrisome fixation with genitalia, namely beavers and monster cocks, yes the character development is not fantastic, yes there is a lack of depth, but no matter, it was hilariously funny. I had plenty of laughs, even more eye rolls but I thoroughly enjoyed it and after the books I had just read it was extremely well received.
“Does everyone in Canada call pussies beavers? Like the Brits call them fannies?”
This book firmly goes with the age old saying opposites attract. We have Violet who is an accountant and Alex who is a hockey player. Violet is young but is trying to carve out her place in the world. Her brother, Buck, is a NHL hockey player too so she is always surrounded by hockey, but she wanted to be Violet, not Bucks sister, she wanted to be respected in her own right and make a name for herself. By being so closely connected to hockey and having been burned in the past, she knows their manwhore notoriety and has vowed never to go near one ever again.
“On your knees, motherpucker.”
Violets mum drags her to one of Bucks games and it is here that she meets Alex. Alex Waters was hotness personified, not only was he drop dead gorgeous, he was charming, yet cocky, he had the typical “player” reputation, he was the captain of the team, but underneath all that you could tell that Alex was more. He was a literary genius underneath that playboy exterior and had a heart of gold. He was totally adorable and of course that rep, was totally unfounded. He let people think what they wanted, what they expected, but he knew who he was and not many others did.
“I love that he’s hard on the outside and a total marshmallow on the inside.”
Violet was a quirky character and what you saw is what you got, her unfiltered mouth had me in hysterics and she was a character that you couldn’t help but like and love. It is this sassy mouth that first catches Alex’s attention and while Violet is quite set on just one night, after all one night couldn’t hurt…it soon becomes apparent that one night is not enough for Alex and so the wooing begins.
“It’s been a long time since anyone has given me face-to-pussy resuscitation. I don’t remember it being anything close to this incredible.”
Violet doesn’t really stand a chance with Alex, when Alex woos he woos hard, he was a man on a mission and Violet really had no choice on the matter. Even the ice princess was cracking and it was warming to see their relationship blossom. With famous hockey players comes the inevitable press and paparazzi and with the reputation that Alex has you always knew that this wasn’t going to be an easy ride for either of them.
“I’m so glad you fought for me. You’re the best chance I’ve taken.”
Yes the dialogue is cheesy, yes there is copious amounts of sex, yes it is dirty, but most of all it was entertaining and funny. If you can get past those points then you will no doubt enjoy this book. As I said in the beginning, I read it as tongue in cheek and enjoyed the humour with which is written. It was a refreshing read and one that I enjoyed. This was my first read by Helena Hunting but I am sure it won’t be my last.
