Release Day Blitz, Review & Giveaway ~ Stain by Francette Phal

Book Description:

"You're like the sun...and I'm the stupid moon. Always chasing after you."

I didn't know it was possible to fall so deeply into someone. To drown so strongly into their bottomless depths coming up for air was unfathomable. Until he comes along, with his sun-hot radiance, and eclipses the candle that is me. He's Lucifer before the fall, beautiful but the devil is in the way he looks at me. In the way his touch brands his name across every inch of my skin. His kisses possess my soul in the most sinful of ways.

Maddox Moore is my beginning and my end. Protector, friend, and lover—he's become my sole religion. At his side I become fearless, in his arms I burn to cinders, and in worshiping him I lose myself and discover the person he sees in me. But nothing is forever. Moments are ephemeral. No matter how much you want something life inevitably reminds you that you can't have it.

I'm damaged. He's broken. We're both covered in stains. Stains that make it impossible for us to hold onto each other.

“I want him so deep mending the wound will be impossible. He’ll bring the shards and I’ll provide the flesh, and we’ll bleed the stains slicking our souls.”

I do love a Francette Phal book as you never know what you are going to get or how dark or deep she is going to go. This is quite tame by her standards but the intensity is still ever present.

Aylee and Maddox shouldn't have worked but they did. They say that opposites attract and that was definitely akin to these two. They brought out the best in each other and Aylee gave Maddox a reason to change and clean himself up. But they also had a lot in common they were both two scarred souls.

“Asshole is my first, middle, and last name.”

Aylee was a quiet girl who kept herself to herself. Her home life was awful and being adopted had not helped her situation. Aylee was a girl that hid behind her scars, her scars were her emotional outlet and a way to let out her emotions and feelings. Aylee felt “stained,” she had that mark on her, a big dirty mark that no matter how much she purges never goes away. Feeling unlovable, unlikeable and invisible to most she led a very sad and lonely existence.

“Secrets are dangerous to keep. They rot you from the inside out. Every dark secret one harbors is a colony of millions of white little maggots crawling and burrowing inside the valleys and caverns of your being. Multiplying, procreating, and eating away at you until everything you thought you were disappears, leaving nothing but a shell behind. That’s what I am. A shell. A husk of the girl I could’ve been.”

Maddox was another one that had endured an horrific past and now it was just him and his twin brother Noah. While Noah had managed to keep on the straight and narrow Maddox had turned to running to purge his “stain.” He was cocky and arrogant but this was all a front, for kicks he had his own porn site and he also sold drugs, he was living life on a very thin line. He had that bad boy persona but underneath all that was a man that just didn’t really know what he wanted, he was just as lost and lonely as Aylee.

“I’m always angry. Can’t remember a day I haven’t felt like destroying something. Or someone. It’s always there, just beneath the surface. Sometimes I can control it. Other times…I don’t want to.”

Aylee had admired Maddox from afar, there was something about Maddox that pulled her towards him, even though she knew she should steer well clear. Their paths crossing in a class gives Aylee the in that she needs to be noticed, plus she has an ulterior motive, she wants Maddox to sit for her for an art project.

“I’ll take your pussy, Aylee, gladly…but I don’t want your heart. You can keep that.”

“Good…It’s not something I’d offer you anyway.”

Even though their pasts are tragic when these two are together you cannot help but get emotionally invested in their story and their journey. Maddox is having alien feelings and he really doesn’t know what or how to deal with it. He was intense, blasé and disinterested but Aylee had a way of pulling him in and he didn’t know whether he liked it or not...it seems his heart has other ideas. The more time these two spend together the more they see the real person underneath the facades and realise they have a lot more in common than they first anticipated. Could these two just be what the other needs or will a stained soul and a stained soul just drag them even deeper?

“He’s…he’s got a lot of broken pieces, Aylee. Maybe too many to put back together. Just be careful. He might cut.”

My only niggle with this book was that I still had a few questions, the ending felt a little rushed and I was left wanting more at the end, it felt like a “to be continued” rather than a standalone, I just wanted more at the end. I have heard that there will be a novella early 2016 so at least I hope my thirst for more will be quenched.

“…she’s unknowingly knocking the fucking breath out of me and I can’t remember how to start again.”
