COAST (Kick Push 2) – by Jay McLean
Series: The Road #3, Kick Push #2
Release Date: June 7, 2016
Book Description:
One life-changing summer.
One boy.
The boy.
The boy who offered me safe touches and heart-stopping smiles - smiles he shared with his son.
We filled our days with porch-step kisses,
filled our ears with laughter,
filled our hearts with love.
Deep, soul-aching, desperate love.
But love is misleading.
It’s an invisible, fleeting moment.
Somewhere between false adoration and pure hatred comes an emotion, a vulnerable need, a single desire.
It lives within the ones who miss it, who crave it,
who know better than to expect it.
Love is relentless.
Even when that love turns to hate, turns to loathing,
turns to pain.
Love should heal you.
But it can also break you.
Believe me, I know…
Because I'm Becca Owens - a broken girl…
…And he's Josh Warden - the boy who broke me.

“Somewhere over the rainbow…”
Coast is the much anticipated sequel to Kick Push and
continues from where Kick Push left off and has also been on my most highly
anticipated book list for this year. To say that I was anxious to read this one
is a huge understatement. Jay McLean never fails to deliver a book that is
chock full of emotion and intense character connection and Coast is no
different.
“At least now I’ve kicked, and it’s
her turn to push.”
Josh, Tommy and Becca commandeered my heart in Kick Push, as
always with Jay McLean her characters are unforgettable and the love that I had
for this trio only amplified in Coast. I’m not going to go into any real
details as this book is one of those ones that deserves to be read as the
author intended but I am going to just mention some of my thoughts and feelings
instead.
“She’ll always be his girl. Even
if she has no idea she is.”
Josh…this single dad captivated my heart from the outset of
this series, he was a selfless person that put his son first always. The love
he has for his son is intensely swoon worthy and ovary combusting and their
relationship is brought to life in vivid detail with Jay McLean’s words. But
his love and generosity wasn’t limited to his family though. Having been on the
bread line with nothing and no support Josh was thankful for the help he got
when he needed it most and reciprocated with his own generosity and time. It is
this trait that makes him one of my favourite heroes, he really was the epitome
of perfect. Three things changed his life forever…the birth of Tommy, meeting Grams
and loving Becca and he has never forgot either of them. These three events
made Josh who he was today and the high regard he holds these people in is
prevalent throughout this book and will only make you love him all the more.
Josh Warden has cemented his place on my list of BBF’s.
“He wears his pain on his
sleeves, and hides his joys in his heart, because he’s so damn terrified of losing
them.”
Becca has been through so much in her life and while for a
time they defined her, she is now in a place where she is going from strength
to strength. Time away from Josh has enabled her to attend college and therapy,
two things that are giving her back a life that she so richly deserves. Her
reconnection with her father is tough and is fraught with its own problems but
her dad tries his hardest to make up for the eighteen years of his absence and
it was actually great to see them try and mend their own bridges. When Becca
and Josh’s lives intersect once again though, will the past come bac to haunt
them or will they be able to move on and reignite a love that once burned so
fiercely?
“My safe place is the knowledge
that when I fall, they will help me fly. Help me soar. Help me coast.”
Tommy, this kid stole my heart in Kick Push and he totally
decimated it in Coast. This kid is wise before his time and every scene where
he was present either made me laugh hysterically or cry just as bad. This kid…this
kid…I want him, I want to kidnap him and have him all for myself. He stole
every scene and this is one kid I will never ever forget. I’m going to hound
Jay for a Tommy book.
“We loved in ways that can’t be
explained, hurt in ways that can’t be justified.”
Grams, this lady is such a pivotal character and she has a
huge part to play in this book, with age comes a whole heap of issues and
dementia is just one of the many evils life throws are our beloveds. This
storyline really resonated deep for me, as we too are looking after a family member
who has been debilitated by this disease. But Gram’s personality still shines
throughout and she added so much to this book.
Jay McLean has penned another emotional read that is filled
with all those feels that I crave. The path to true love never runs smooth and
for Josh and Becca there are a lot of bends, curve balls and issues that need
to be travelled. But this story ran true to Josh and Becca’s back story and I
am so glad that Jay McLean really thought through and considered every aspect
of their reconnection. This book made me cry, made me laugh but most of all it
made me love. I know this is fiction but when an author truly nails it, you
live and breathe their lives and for two books I have been consumed by these
characters. Another fantastic series from Jay McLean and once again a totally
unforgettable read.
“Josh: You hope for a better
tomorrow.
Becca: And if it doesn’t come?
Josh: Then you cherish a greater
yesterday.”
