“…Before you ever set foot in the Den, you were already mine.”

I have to admit, this book did not go the way I expected it to, Skye Warren totally led me down a different path and it was one where I went happily. Blindsided, but very happy. The Knight continues from where The Pawn left off, with Avery totally despondent because she has lost everything. Avery’s father is still seriously ill, her pride is at an all-time low, she has lost her virginity and now the house, all at the hands of our anti-hero, Gabriel. Gabriel is the common denominator in her demise, he is behind everything that has gone wrong and while her mind hates him with a passion, everything else about her just craves him. Avery really struggles with herself internally throughout this book, how could one man, who has been so destructive, be her only waking thought, and as she finds herself in a run down, flea bitten motel room, she has a lot of time to think.

Gabriel is a man that we know very little about, he is still that commanding enigma from The Pawn and while his treatment of Avery from the start and even in this book has been abhorrent at times I always had a feeling that there was more to the man and a lot more behind his actions. I was desperate to find out what made Gabriel tick, did he have a heart? It seems in this game of chess you just don’t know who to trust, who is good and who is bad?

“And you’re the object of my depravity, the target of every dark wish, the canvas I want to paint. I won’t be satisfied until I’ve marked every inch of you, inside and out.”

“Then why did you let me go?

“Ah, little virgin…So that I could chase you.”

This was a book that had so many twists and turns and Skye Warren certainly ramps up the suspense and intrigue as this house of cards comes tumbling down. This book definitely concentrated more on the overall plot rather than Avery and Gabriel together and while I missed that underlying, sizzling chemistry that these two had in The Pawn, that undercurrent is still ever present as these two navigate the train wreck that has become Avery’s life.

I am still trying to come to terms with the way that Gabriel treats Avery, I am sure that there is a method to his madness, at least I am hoping that there is, else he is just a prick, but throughout this instalment I just had this gut feeling that all was not as it seems. But, maybe that is the hopeless romantic in me trying to see the world through rose coloured glasses. We are treated to glimpses of Gabriel’s heart and it is these little actions that keep that vein of hope alive and certainly leave you salivating for book three.

“I want you bent over and broken. I want you bleeding at my feet, little virgin.”

Skye Warren has delivered another compelling read and one that I didn’t want to put down. As the walls of the house that Avery has tried so valiantly to keep start talking, who will be left standing? Bring it on Skye Warren, my mind is full of theories and I desperately need to be put out of my misery.

Book Description:

The price of survival…

Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.

There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.

My virginity.

A forbidden auction…

Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.

Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
