Book Description:

The Red Market is where every pound of flesh has a price tag tacked onto it. It is a place where money can buy you everything, even a heart.

Caesar has fallen and a new boss, Mateo, has risen; but he has lost his Lettie Doll and he doesn't know where to find her. She stole his soul and now he must find someone to replace her. Just like her love, his new power is an illusion. The real force behind the Red Market is about to show her cards and no one wants to play her game.

Mateo and Lettie will both have to fight to find their love, but sometimes it is only found in death. You cannot go through life unnoticed by demise when you play with it every day. Sooner or later, it catches up with you and you lose.

Teaser:

I am unreasonable. I used to be the quiet girl who listened and took what she thought she deserved, but as the pieces of time come back together like a painful puzzle, I am shriveling down to nothing except the splinters of love and psychosis of my mind. I am totally unhinged, yet through this cacophony of chaos, I am strangely finding myself.

“Torture. Pain. Insanity. They all meet again, and the lamb eats herself, birthing a wolf set to kill.”

Never has a series tested every boundary I never knew I had…until this duet. This book has everything you read about in newspapers but never truly believed existed. It is far from glamourous, far from normal and totally depraved, disgusting and horrific, but I have to admit became an addictive read that I couldn’t put down and desperately wanted to finish. I felt sick, I felt disgusted, I cringed but I achieved something…I finished it.

“I realise that all I long for is hello at the end of the day, a person. A someone who will be there when the goodbyes are over.”

This duet primarily centres on the “Red Market” organ trafficking, where the streets are rid of unwanted’s and their live bodies are taken to The Goodbye Man to be put to sleep and their organs harvested and sold on the black market. As you can imagine, to do something like this in the first instance needs certain individuals, individuals without scruples and most certainly certifiably insane and more or less every character in this story desperately needed an asylum. This book contains incest, necrophilia and rape and while you would think that the organ harvesting would be hard enough nothing prepares you for the dark, depravity that some characters unleash in this book that they tried desperately to control in The Goodbye Man.

“Ugly people’s hearts are the same as beautiful ones, they still beat.”

If you have read The Goodbye Man you know what you are letting yourself in for in some regards. The writing once again is on point and while I found it a little slow going in the middle it really picked up after and for once I could see light at the end of the tunnel. I have to say that how these two authors came up with these characters makes me question their sanity because they seriously must have hacked into the darkest recesses of their brains to ever bring these characters to life. While these characters stretch your imagination to the very limit, these authors gave their character’s heart, they may be black but every character had redeeming qualities and issues that truly were the roots to their evil. I can’t condone what they do or have done but the authors do hammer home that they were not born evil, evil happened to them to make them this way.

“Some boys have a special bond with their mothers, a tether that ties them to the womb from whence they came. I would cut my mother’s heart out in an instant.”

Svetlana, this girl seriously never catches a break and after the end of The Goodbye Man you knew it wasn’t going to get any better in the first instance. This girl is the strongest woman I have read about. What she has endured and what she continues to endure are testament to her inner strength and her resilience and any other person would have capitulated by now and seriously given up the ghost. While Svetlana has her inner and outer scars, deep inside she is still a little girl that wanted to be loved. Loved as in a mother loves a daughter, not the horrific and depraved “love” she has been shown so far, but it seems the sick and twisted has left her permanently scarred. Svetlana needs to find her new normal and while it is far from perfect, it was perfect for her.

“Torn apart by the nasty that surrounded me, siphoned from any decency, I clung onto a sliver of hope as the man with dark eyes and hair haunted my dreams. Little did I realize back then, he would be my salvation both physically and mentally, and I would be the same for him.”

I am purposely not going to mention the male characters this time as I don’t want to spill any spoilers but the series is perfectly wrapped up for everybody in more ways than one. Somethings I saw coming, some I didn’t but I did feel that one person in particular got the only redemption he would ever need. While sometimes it hurt to read, knowing the characters, knowing their inner torment and turmoil some things need to be said and done and most got what they deserved.

“We all have a little darkness in us. I have my own monsters that I wrestle each day, but my monsters will leave with them. I will finally be free to find all that I have lost.”

I very much doubt I will ever find another book like this, yes it is unique, yes it pushes boundaries, definitely don’t eat while reading but appreciate that these authors tested your limits, pushed your boundaries all while delivering an addictive story that while you should have detested it and put it aside you can’t help but read and see the good amongst the evil.

Dysfunctional empires were made to fall.

I am Caesar. Broken and conflicted. I am a man who gives false goodness to those who crave it. I provide solace to the ones who beg to be saved, giving them the goodbyes they want. But, my quiet little world is about to be shattered by the whispers from heaven and hell.

I am Mateo. Unlovable and unworthy. I am the boy everyone runs from. I keep love close to me in little jars of perfection, reminding me of a thousand goodbyes I never had to say, because I left them before they could leave me.

I am Svetlana. Dirty and Used. Birthed into brutality while still trying to comprehend my version of normal. I am an injured lamb, eaten by filthy wolves day after day. Just as salvation seems like it's within reach, a goodbye from this awful world is all that I wish for.

**Graphic content warning including detailed depiction of brutal, bloody acts. Physical and emotional abuse is also apparent throughout this book with graphic sex scenes, both consensual and non-sensual. Reader discretion is highly advised.
