“How can she really fall for someone she doesn’t truly know? How can I even like myself when I don’t know who I am.”

Halo was not what I was expecting, this was my first read by this author and I was attracted to the cover and the synopsis in the first instance. It is hard to say what I thought it was going to be, but this wasn’t it, if that makes sense, but it is unexpected in a good way.

Halo and Thomas were childhood sweethearts. They met in their teens and their relationship was not taken well by Halo’s parents. Thomas was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, but he was a good kid. He had a tough home life, his dad was an alcoholic and Thomas bore the brunt of his violent outbursts both emotionally and physically. Thomas was biding his time though, he just wanted to get the hell out of there and the Navy Seals were his ambition and his golden ticket.

“I will always come back to you, Halo, even in the dark I will find you. You are my Halo.”

Halo was the normality in Thomas’s life, she gave him a reason to wake up in the morning and they were truly inseparable. Their relationships goes from strength to strength and they marry young. Halo and Thomas had that soul deep connection, first love at its most powerful, a forever love. Thomas has many deep rooted issues, mainly born from the abuse at the hand of his dad, he feels that he is unlovable and not worthy of love in any shape or form and it is these insecurities that cause the most issues between them. That and the then effects of Thomas being in a war zone.

Thomas leaves Halo after a particularly horrific tour of duty and her landing the news on him that she was pregnant was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Now alone and pregnant Halo is on the brink of giving birth when this book starts and their past is filtered through with flashbacks and as the story progresses you finally begin to try and understand Thomas’s actions and the lasting effects they have on Halo as a person.

After giving birth in the hospital Halo comes across an injured veteran called Ryder that has been in and out of various hospitals over the past four months. He not only has physical injuries but has amnesia too, he was divorced and had no family so once he was released he had nowhere to go. Struggling for money, Halo offers him her garage apartment to rent.

Both loving the company and becoming extremely comfortable around each other the lines of friendship do eventually get a little blurry. Ryder though is struggling to take the next step because how can he offer Halo himself completely when he doesn’t know himself who he is. Halo struggles to take that next step because the pain of Thomas divorcing her is still raw and she is unsure if she has a heart to give.

“We are in a complicated situation with our pasts dictating our present.”

Of course, the path to true love never runs smoothly and as Ryder begins to remember snippets, will something from his past rock their future? I loved everything about this book but I have to say I have huge reservations about the feasibility of the plot twist that the author delivers. I can see that she has covered her bases extremely well but there is one point that is not addressed that in my opinion would have been a huge giveaway, so while I enjoyed the twist I always had it in the back of my mind that I didn’t believe it and that took something away from the impact.

Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed it and despite my reservations I was championing these two along from the start. As I said, RC Stephens is a new to me author and one that I will be definitely checking out again.
