Review ~ Combust (Everyday Heroes #2) by K Bromberg

Book Description:

From New York Times Bestselling author, K. Bromberg, comes the second standalone book in the Everyday Heroes series. Just how hot will firefighter Grady Malone turn up the heat?

Songwriter Dylan McCoy has been burned.

By her boyfriend she found in her bed . . . with someone else.

By the contract she signed that obligates her to work with him until the songs for his new album are complete.

By her agent when she asked Dylan to keep their breakup on the down-low.

When she finds herself in Sunnyville, she refuses to let her new roommate burn her too. Still . . . a rebound has never looked so good.

That’s her first thought when she sees firefighter Grady Malone.
Sexy. Charismatic. Unapologetic. He’s a man who carries his own scars—the ones on his back, the survivor’s guilt on his soul, and the fear in his heart.

When an unexpected visitor puts their roommate status to the test, will their undeniable attraction burn out, or will they both take a chance and play with fire?

“I used to work out because it was the way to feed my ego. Now I work out to save my soul.”

OMG!! K Bromberg hasn’t hit me that hard in a while and as I sit here, typing this review, with tears still streaming down my face, I can only sit back and think, shit, that was an amazing book. This was one of those reads that I could not put down, from first to last page this book had me hooked, I couldn’t find enough gaps in the day to read even just a few more pages and when a book has you feeling like that, you know it is a winner.

K Bromberg’s inherent talent for emotional, contemporary romance is prevalent throughout Combust, both with her characters and their story. The character connection was on point, the plot genuine and flowed naturally and the dialogue and banter was absolute perfection. Both characters in their own right had their issues, both on the outside and the inside, but it was learning to love yourself that was the hidden meaning behind these words. How you see yourself, is not necessarily how others do, sometimes you just need to look through a different lens.

“We all have scars. Some are visible, some aren’t. In the end, they represent the fact that you’re stronger now than whatever tried to hurt you.”

We first met the Malone brothers in Cuffed and now it is the turn of our firefighter, Grady, to burn up the pages and this man is seriously scorching. Grady is a man that has the weight of the world on his shoulders, most unwarranted, but ever present none the less. Grady is a man that took pride in his appearance, is drop dead gorgeous, ripped and has one huge heart. However, after a job that went wrong, he is left with a back marred with scars and while those scars you can see, it the ones that you can’t that haunt him the most.

“There was no two-in, two-out.”

Dylan McCoy, is a stunningly beautiful, curvy woman, but to her, all she sees is fat and cellulite. Dylan is a songwriter and having written for and then embarked on a relationship with one well known artist, being thrust into the spotlight did her self esteem no favours. Between the media and jealous bitches, her confidence is at an all time low, even though she is beautiful and extremely talented.

“That brush of his lips tells me Grady Malone may be as devastating to my heart as Jett, only in a completely different way.”

Having been cheated on, Dylan is in need of solace and quiet to fulfil her end of the contract, writing more songs for her ex. When she arrives in Sunnyville to be a guest of her brother’s friend, Grady, she finds herself thrust from the frying pan, into the fire.

“Tell me you want this. I need to hear you say it before we continue because once we start, we won’t be stopping for consent.”

Oooo, I do love a slow burn and K Bromberg does an amazing job capturing all those little telling glances and glimpses as these two navigate being in each other’s company. Neither is on the look out for love or a relationship, but sometimes the heart wants who the heart wants and that is the end of it.

This book was full of heart, passion, emotion and substance and I adored every single word. These two were a couple I didn’t want to leave behind and only wanted more from. With one more Malone brother to be heard from I cannot wait to see where these two end up and catching up with the secondary characters was extremely welcome. Once again, K Bromberg has written a winner.

EXCERPT

I watched him stride across the café toward the door, hating the way everything tightened when he did.
His or mine, I wasn’t sure.
But it was there.
Heavy.
Pressing on my heart.
I couldn’t stop from watching him through the big windows as he started down the sidewalk, the man a scorching silhouette in the blaze of the day.
But he didn’t climb into his car that was parked at the curb.
He began to pace.
A pace that looked like indecision and turmoil.
Back and forth right on the other side of the window.
His head tilted back toward the sky, as if it might hold an answer, before he set his coffee and the lollipops down on one of the open tables, dug in his pocket, and pulled out his phone.
“You’re an idiot,” Jenna hissed from beside me. “That guy likes you, and he’s literally the hottest thing to ever walk through that door. And he bought All. The. Lollipops.”
Maybe that was part of the problem.
“I don’t get simple,” was my response.
“What if he doesn’t want simple?”
I would have answered her, told her that in the end, everyone did. They always took the easy way out when the going got tough. Except the café phone rang. I moved for it, thankful for the distraction, something to keep my feet from rounding the counter and running after him.
Because what the hell would that accomplish?
I lifted the receiver from the wall and pressed it to my ear. “A Drop of Hope. How can I help you?”
“Go out with me.” His gravelly voice echoed through the line.
A surprised sound whispered from my lips, and Kale was suddenly at the window, his face pressed to the glass, hand shading his eyes so he could see inside. His other hand was holding his cell to his ear. “Go out with me, Hope. Just dinner. Because I can’t fucking stop thinking about you. Couldn’t after I saw you the first time at Olive’s on Friday night. It only got worse after I saw you here Monday morning. I don’t know what it is about you . . . but there’s something that makes me want to figure it out.”
My breaths were hard pants, my heart a jackhammer in my chest. “My life’s complicated, Kale.”
“And I’m offering you a night away from it. Don’t you at least deserve that?”
I wanted to beg him, what then? What happened if I fell for that smirk and that smile and those tender eyes?
Fast and hard?
I could already feel myself slipping. My heart tipping his direction.
What happened if Dane found out?
What then?
But I was so tired of that man controlling every aspect of my life, even after I’d made the decision to cut him from it.
Jenna was suddenly in my face, gripping my wrist, her voice a hard, demanding whisper. “You tell him yes, Harley Hope. Don’t you dare hang up that phone without telling him yes. You deserve something just for you. Just for you.”
Indecision swarmed, questions and worries and want.
But it was the feeling balled in my stomach that trembled the floor beneath my feet.
The urge to reach out and touch on the beauty and tenderness that swam in his eyes. To discover if it was real.
The throb of desire that begged, a whisper in my ear that goaded—just one touch.
The hidden need to feel those hands skating my flesh.
I guessed I’d thought I’d never crave that again, my life fulfilled, my spirit content in knowing I was living for what was right.
Jenna squeezed tighter, my bossy best friend mouthing the word as she angled her head with the demand. “Say yes.”
It was at the same second Kale fisted his hand against the window, his forehead rocking against it, his own words a petition. “Come on, Hope. Say yes. I promise you, you won’t regret it.”
A hint of playfulness came out on the last, but it didn’t matter, because I was agreeing.
“Yes,” I murmured, wanting to feel something good even though I wasn’t so much a fool that I didn’t know I was making a mistake. That in the end, it wouldn’t hurt.
Because it already felt as if this mattered.
As if he mattered.
“Okay. One night. Just dinner,” I reiterated.
He breathed out in what sounded like relief. “Just dinner.”
As if anything could ever be as simple as that.

“You’d be a fool not to take her on.”

It is no secret I am a huge fan of Marni Mann. From the first time that I read her first book many, many moons ago I just clicked with her writing style and she has become a firm favourite. The more this author writes, the more I fall in love and no matter the genre she puts her mind to, she always delivers. After a run of dark reads, Marni Mann has changed it up and delivered an extremely swoon worthy contemporary romance that will leave all you ladies in a puddle. Our hero is one incredibly handsome alpha male, that never knew what he wanted until her found her. Despite the age difference, these two burn up the pages and as with any Marni Mann read, the pages literally combust, after all, this woman knows how to write a sex scene.

I work in an extremely niche area and when a book is delivered in that area I literally rub my hands in glee, so when I saw that this book was based in and around a management agency I was all in. Brett is an agent in the Acting division, he and his friends started this business from scratch and are extremely successful. Unlike some agencies, this one prides itself on sticking to the rules and delivering the very best they can for all their clients. While competitive with one and other, they all had the same goal, the agency and their clients.

Brett caught my attention from the very beginning, his persona was so intriguing that you could not help but be swept along in his hormones. Despite being insanely attractive, Brett has his standards and there are many lines he does not cross…until he meets James, who has him striding over every single one of them.

James is America’s sweetheart actress that has graced the screen since she was a little kid. She was adorable in every way and yet incredibly mature for her age. Losing her parents at a young age and the fact that she has worked for so long in the industry she has hardened to life and having been dumped by her long-time boyfriend was now trying to find her feet once again.

“No, I hired you to be in charge of my career, but you’re not allowed to manage my heart, and it makes me furious that you would even try…Every decision has been taken away from me. Don’t take that one too.”

As soon as these two meet the sparks fly and as I said above Marni Mann knows how to deliver heat, all the while embracing emotion and connection and this book is no different. The relationship that these two embark on is thrown together in the most unlikely of scenarios, but the chemistry that these two shared had both of them flailing, both emotionally and sexually.

I loved the added drama that can only be found in this industry and Marni Mann had certainly done her homework. The drama in this book, is good drama, not between the couple, but between the life they find themselves living and the people they are most unfortunate enough to come across.

“I’d been living in my closet since the alert went out. I hadn’t eaten; I hadn’t slept…my whole world was crumbling, and the people that were supposed to be helping me had completely vanished.”

With some fantastic secondary characters and a villain that you will hate with a passion, I cannot wait to see if we will be getting more books. With so many sides to the agency and each niche field the possibilities are endless. As ever, Marni Mann delivered one unputdownable book.

Release Day Blitz & Review ~ Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland

Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland is LIVE!!!!

Book Description:

My relationship with Hunter Delucia started backwards.

We met at a wedding—him sitting on the groom’s side, me sitting on the bride’s. Stealing glances at each other throughout the night, there was no denying an intense, mutual attraction.

I caught the bouquet; he caught the garter. Hunter held me tightly while we danced and suggested we explore the chemistry sparking between us. His blunt, dirty mouth should’ve turned me off. But for some crazy reason, it had the opposite effect on me.

We ended up back in my hotel room. The next morning, I headed home to New York leaving him behind in California with the wrong number.

I thought about him often, but after my last relationship, I’d sworn off of charming, cocky, gorgeous-as-sin men. A year later, Hunter and I met again at the birth of our friends’ baby. Our attraction hadn't dulled one bit. After a whirlwind trip, he demanded a real phone number this time. So I left him with my mother’s—she could scare away any man with her talks of babies and marriage—and flew back home.

I’d thought it was funny, until the following week when he rang the bell at Mom’s house for Sunday night dinner. The crazy, gorgeous man had won over my mother and taken an eight-week assignment in my city. He proposed we spend that time screwing each other out of our systems.

Eight weeks of mind-blowing sex with no strings attached? What did I have to lose?

Nothing, I thought.

It’s just sex, not love.

But you know what they say about the best laid plans…

“I thought I couldn’t get you out of my mind, but it was my heart that wouldn’t let go.”

Vi Keeland is one of those authors that always delivers and once again Sex, Not Love ticked all those boxes. Sex, Not Love is one helluva swoon worthy romance while embracing the fears that many people have before embarking on putting their heart out there. This book was full of heart, emotion and real life and I couldn’t help but champion these two characters along.

“If Hunter was my real thing, why did I have to go back to imposters?”

Natalia Rossi and Hunter Delucia first meet at their best friend’s wedding and the instant attraction was sizzling. Neither want a relationship, neither succumb but it wasn’t for want of trying and smooth words. Having married best friends means that their paths keep crossing and that sizzling hot chemistry never wanes, no matter the months and months that pass.

“It’s been nine months, and here you are still chasing me after one night in my bed. And I didn’t even put out. Imagine the condition you’d be in if I did.”

Natalia was a great heroine, divorced at twenty-eight and incredibly jaded with the male species. However, she had all that Italian feistiness which made her character pop off the pages, Vi Keeland did an amazing job bringing this character to life. Natalia had a heart the size of Texas, put everyone before herself but she was no doormat, she was just inherently kind and generous.

Hunter Delucia on the outside was the typical commitment-phobe but there was a lot more to this utterly adorable man. Drop dead sexy, with a filthy mouth and the equipment to back it up, this man had it all, so why was he still single?

“You wore me down, and now you’ve worn me out, Mr. Delucia.”

Starting as friends with benefits with strictly no emotional attachment was a tall order considering the chemistry that these two shared, but they have a lot of issues between them to work through. I loved how Hunter’s past was slowly eeked out with flashbacks to the past and gave a greater insight to the man he is today.

“So if you want to protect her—really allow her to move on without it dragging out for years like things with my dad did—don’t leave her questioning. Because while the truth hurts, it’s like a Band-Aid when you rip it off. The pain goes away. It’s the lies and questioning that keep you aching for a long time.”

This was all about exploring a connection, breaking through the barriers and grabbing a once in a lifetime opportunity with both hands. Confiding, trusting and finding that soul mate, that no matter the bad, makes everything seem so much better. Absolutely adored it, read it one sitting and could easily re-read it again.

“I used to think Hunter Delucia had stolen a piece of my heart. But I was wrong. Because eventually, even the heart stops beating. This man stole a piece of my soul—because the soul lives forever, and so will my love for this beautiful man.”

Reviewed by Donna ~ 4 stars

“I will live to hurt you. I will live to torture you. You will die a slow, painful death for this.”

I couldn’t wait for the conclusion to this series and Lisa Renee Jones did not disappoint with one heck of a page turner. Once I picked this one up there was no stopping me as I devoured it from first to last page. Lisa Renee Jones left us on a doozy of a cliff hanger in book three and while I still had the ending clear in my head, I was grateful for the re-cap that she provides before the book starts. End Game starts where Bad Deeds ended and once you start, you won’t come up for breath.

Shane and Emily’s story was left in a bloody heap at the end of Bad Deeds and without giving anything away, this review is going to be vague. The fallout from Shane’s brother’s activities with the Martina Cartel is far from over and Shane spends the majority of this book still putting right, Derek’s wrongs. Amongst the legal stuff though is the continuation of the story and this book, as well as suspenseful was sad as hell.

“This book is not closed, but we’re the ones turning the pages.”

I cried a river reading this book as well as being on the edge of my seat as Shane fights to right so many wrongs. Love and loss is the meat of this book, and while at times it was quite sappy, for me, that was needed to start to mend my broken heart. All the puzzle pieces begin to fall into place but the Martina Cartel are not going to make anything easy. This book really tests Shane’s limits, how far would our clean-cut lawyer go to save the people he loved? This book has Shane questioning everything he knows about himself but at least he is surrounded by grounded people that can take the emotion out of his decisions.

This has been a fantastic series and as ever, Lisa Renee Jones’s writing had me on the edge of my seat one minute and swooning the next. I wish I could include more quotes, I highlighted a tonne but they are all spoilers and this is definitely a conclusion you need to read all by yourself. I have been addicted to this authors writing style since the first book I picked up of hers and with a new series on the horizon and a busy publishing schedule for 2018, I cannot wait to see what comes next.

Friday Frights ~ PNR Review ~ Straight to Hell (Hell's Gate Book 1) by Jane Hinchey

Book Description:

Everything you think you know is about to change.
My name is Lucifer. You can call me Lucy – I’m also known as the Devil and Satan, though why my idiot brothers came up with those nicknames is beyond me. I’m an Arch Angel and I run Hell. Yup, I’m the CEO.

Hell is easy. Hell runs like a well-oiled machine. Punishment befitting your sins is carried out and once your sentence is done, voilà, you get to go to Heaven. Simple. Easy.

Until suddenly there’s a blip on the radar. A breach. Some numbnuts on earth are trying to open a portal to another dimension. A very bad, very terrifying, very deadly dimension. So instead of my simple life in Hell, I end up earth side, where nothing is as it seems, looking for the soul-stealing monster, avoiding the grumpy angel sent from Heaven and finding out my brothers Michael and Gabriel are twats. That last part’s not true – I’ve known they were twats all along.

With an unexpected fondness for my new human friends as a distraction, and my demonic presence stirring up a shit show of epic proportions, all I want to do is go back to my peaceful life in Hell. But someone has to save the world. It may as well be me.

I've got to admit I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in a brand-new series. It’s a fun read but also has a compelling story and is a touch erotic.

Who would of thought that Lucifer is in fact a woman, whoa. Also, she is not only the evil person that everyone believed but is in fact a compassionate woman who cares about the human race.

Lucifer or Lucy as she likes to be called gets more than she bargained for when she came up to Earth. After finding out that a soul stealer has come through from another dimension, she finds he has already killed and was determined to stop him at all costs and send him back to where he belonged. This is how she meets Levi, handsome and sexy and Lucy falls hard.

After Levi gets over the shock when meeting Lucy for the first time and he explained who she was.

"You're...You're... a woman."
He blew out a surprised breath.
"Correct." Lucy says.

Working together to find the soul stealer the attraction between them gets hot even for a girl from Hell. So much so that it leaves Lucy baffled as to how strong her feelings were for a human and when Levi took her in his arms.

“He pulled me to a halt, and lowered his mouth to mine, fusing us together. He wrapped his arms around me, the hold tight, unyielding. The heat was blistering and surreal at the same time, and I felt it all the way down to my toes.”

With more hurdles to overcome, like having to eat like a human lol, Lucy comes up against animosity from a friend of old. Also, a brother out for vengeance.

Great read, loved every word. I couldn't put it down. Hate having to wait until January to how it all goes for Levi, but I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. Excellent book Ms Hinchey.
